brollysheetAs a mum who has dealt with long-term bedwetting I really know what it’s like. I found that most of the waterproof fitted sheets on the market degenerated quicky and needed to be replaced within a year at best. Worse still, their lack of absorbency and huge surface area allowed the wee to ‘travel’. I frequently had to wash the pillow, pillowcase, duvet and duvet cover as well as the waterproof sheet itself.

Trying to stay calm and patient is not always easy in the middle of the night, especially when your child’s sheets are soaked through and you face two loads of washing in the morning and the constant embarrassment of an acrid wee smell in the house. Over 12 years of trial and error I found a few products I liked, but nothing that really stood out from the crowd. With up to six million adults and 1 in 12 British children wetting the bed on a regular basis there is a definite need for a product which provides a practical solution to changing the bed quickly during the night, whilst being comfortable and of the very best quality.

It was really good to hear about a new product on the market. Brolly Sheets are waterproof mattress protectors designed to go over your usual sheets and tuck in under the matress, so they are easy to whip off without having to change all the bedding. I like the name ‘Brolly Sheets’, don’t you? It is so much easier to handle talking about bedwetting when there is a sympathetic vocabularly to use. We used to use the term ‘Nappy Pants’ with a degree of affection until my son got too old to bear the word ‘nappy’. I never knew what to call them after that – ‘Pull-ups’ never sounded quite right. Unlike the usual stiff, noisy waterproof protectors, Brolly Sheets have an upper layer made from 100% cotton, contain a super absorbent middle layer, and non PVC, breathable yet waterproof back making them soft, discrete and as comfortable to sleep on as regular sheets. Currently 25% of Brolly Sheets sales come through referral, which may not be hugely impressive, but and I’d bet that figure would be a lot higher if the subject of bedwetting was not such a huge taboo!
