As a mother of four boys and stepmum to six children, I know how hard it is to choose worthwhile presents. For years I dreaded the usual question from both Grandmas, “What does he want for his birthday?” and “What can I get them for Christmas?” I would try in vain to encourage them to buy the children a surprise present. Then I would have to rack my brains to come up with something that Grandma would think ‘worthwhile’ but that would not make the kids turn up their noses in horror. It was tricky. Before long, the standard currency for gifts was cash, gift vouchers and cheques.
